- Late 2016 Model (EMC 2978): Uses the 820-00875-A board. It supports 6th-Generation Intel Core i5 (2.0 GHz) or i7 (2.4 GHz) processors.
- Mid 2017 Model (EMC 3164): Uses the 820-00840-A board. It supports 7th-Generation Intel Core i5 (2.3 GHz) or i7 (2.5 GHz) processors. [1, 2]
Onboard vs. Removable Parts
Unlike newer Apple Silicon MacBooks, the A1708 model features a unique mix of soldered and modular parts:
- Soldered Components: The CPU and LPDDR3 RAM are integrated into the board. You must choose either 8GB or 16GB RAM configuration at the time of purchase. [1, 2, 3]
- Removable Storage: The SSD is modular and can be unscrewed from the motherboard. If you replace the logic board, you can transfer your existing solid-state drive to the new board. [1, 2, 3]
Purchasing Replacement Boards
If your device has suffered a short circuit, liquid exposure, or a “no power” issue, replacement parts are widely available: [1, 2]
- Used/Refurbished Options: You can purchase tested, working replacement boards on platforms like eBay’s A1708 Logic Board Section or through third-party wholesalers on AliExpress. [1, 2]
- Pricing Insights: Working replacement boards typically range between $70 to $160 USD depending on whether you choose an i5 or i7 CPU, and 8GB or 16GB of RAM. [1]
